COVID-19 Update

March 12, 2020

Dear Parents,

Please accept this email as an update and further information concerning COVID-19 and how this virus is impacting short and long-term plans at AVS. As a school we continue to be proactive in our cleaning efforts. At this point, school will remain in session. However, in an effort to continually provide an environment to maintain student and staff safety, activities such as performances, dances, and field trips have been postponed until further notice. This decision was made in consultation with the Superintendent of Schools, William Rearick, out of an abundance of caution for our school community as a result of the Coronavirus. The justification for which activities are being postponed and which are remaining scheduled are dependent on the attendees at the events. All events that solely involve our school community (students and staff) will take place as scheduled. School sponsored events that bring families and outside public to the event will be postponed. Non-school sponsored activities are up to the discretion of the coordinators of these events. After such functions, our maintenance staff will thoroughly sanitize before students return the following day. This preventive measure of social distancing is one of the strategies recommended by the Centers for Disease Control to minimize the risk of contracting the Coronavirus.

The following have currently been cancelled:

Screenagers Showing – 3/12/2020

8th Grade Musical Performance – 3/13/2020

ARBL Banquet (decision made by ARBL) – 3/15/2020

PTA Meeting – 3/17/2020

Literacy Night – 3/24/2020

PTA Bingo – 3/26/2020

The PTA Theater Camp and Project Safeguard are still being held as scheduled.

The 8th grade trip to Washington, DC is a non-school sponsored event. Questions regarding this event can be directed to Regina McGuiggin at rmcguiggin@mansd.org.

After school activities such as open homework, homework club, drama club, NJHS, student council, LEGO League, art club and spring sports will remain in session.

Student and staff safety is our foremost concern and guides our decisions. We ask that you all remain vigilant in following best hygiene practices. Every expert states that doing so is our best defense in mitigating the spread of this virus.

Please do not hesitate to reach out should you have questions or concerns.

Thank you,

Lori Collins

Principal
